Stegna is a good destination for those who want to combine a seaside break with cycling. The R10 connector route, among others, runs through the surrounding area, allowing cyclists to head west towards Jantar and Mikoszewo or east through Sztutowo, Kąty Rybackie and Krynica Morska. However, these are by no means the only options for cycling enthusiasts. Below, we present five of the most interesting cycling routes in Stegna and the surrounding area, which can easily be adapted to your own needs and abilities.

Cycling routes in Stegna and the surrounding area

Stegna lies between the Vistula Spit and Żuławy, which is why the local cycling routes lead through seaside forests, tourist towns, fields, canals and river areas. Many of them use sections of the R10 connector route running along the spit or connect with EuroVelo 10/13, which runs through Żuławy towards Nowy Dwór Gdański.

Are you planning a cycling trip to the Vistula Spit? We invite you to our seaside hotel in Stegna. Bursztynowe Resort & SPA is located right beside the official R10 route. We offer comfortable apartments, delicious meals at our Sztormowa Restaurant and access to the SPA & Wellness area – ideal for recovery after a cycling trip.

Stegna – Jantar – Mikoszewo cycling route

  • Distance: approximately 20 km round trip (if planning only the one-way section to Jantar, it is approx. 5 km)
  • Cycling time only: approximately 1.5–2 hours
  • Difficulty level: easy
  • Surface: mainly hard-packed gravel and forest roads, with asphalt in places
  • Recommended bike: trekking, gravel or MTB
  • For whom: beginners, recreational cyclists and families with older children

The route leads west from Stegna along the seaside section of the R10. From the centre of Stegna, the route can be reached via Morska or Lipowa Street, then by turning left onto Brzozowa Street. At Brzozowa 4 there is the R10 Route Stegna parking area, located not far from Bursztynowe Resort & SPA. From here, the route leads through the forest towards Junoszyno and Jantar.

Jantar is an important trail junction. The R10 connector route running through Stegna meets the main EuroVelo 10/13 route here. Further on, from Jantar to Mikoszewo, both routes run together. Our suggested route ends on Gdańska Street, next to the ferry crossing in Mikoszewo. However, there is nothing to stop you extending the trip towards the Vistula mouth or – if the ferry is operating at the time – crossing to the other bank and continuing your ride on Sobieszewska Island.

On the Stegna – Jantar – Mikoszewo route, it is particularly worth seeing:

  • the beach and fishing harbour in Jantar;
  • the Żuławy Commuter Railway station in Jantar;
  • the seaside forest between Stegna and Mikoszewo;
  • the forest parking area with shelters in Mikoszewo;
  • the Mikoszewo–Świbno ferry crossing;
  • the Vistula Cut and its mouth into the Baltic Sea;
  • Mewia Łacha Nature Reserve (if extending the trip towards the Vistula mouth).

Stegna – Sztutowo – Kąty Rybackie – Krynica Morska cycling route

  • Distance: approximately 50 km round trip (of which Sztutowo is approximately 6 km one way, and Kąty Rybackie approximately 10 km)
  • Cycling time only: approximately 1–1.5 hours to Sztutowo and back, 1.5–2 hours to Kąty Rybackie and back, or 4–5 hours for the full route
  • Difficulty level: easy on shorter sections, moderate when cycling to Krynica Morska
  • Surface: hard-packed gravel, forest cycling paths, asphalt and short sections on local streets
  • Recommended bike: trekking, gravel, cross or MTB
  • For whom: shorter options for beginners and families, the full route for those accustomed to longer rides

Starting at the R10 parking area on Brzozowa Street in Stegna, head east towards Sztutowo. The initial section leads mainly through seaside forest on a hard-packed gravel surface. In Sztutowo, the route follows quiet streets in the northern part of the town, then reaches a cycling path leading towards Kąty Rybackie. After passing Kąty Rybackie, the trail enters the forest again. While in this area, you can extend the trip by approximately 6–7 km one way and reach the Nowy Świat Shipping Canal, commonly known as the Vistula Spit Canal. The route then continues through the area around Przebrno to Krynica Morska. The section before Krynica is particularly scenic, running close to the dune slope and beach.

In Krynica Morska, the R10 route follows the seaside promenade and a section with a mineral-resin surface. The main trail bypasses the centre, but it is easy to reach it via one of the perpendicular streets. Our suggested route ends in the centre of Krynica Morska. However, the route can be extended by a further approx. 17 km to Piaski – the easternmost part of the town – and then continued along the R10 route to the border between Poland and the Kaliningrad Oblast.

On the Stegna – Sztutowo – Kąty Rybackie – Krynica Morska route, it is particularly worth seeing:

  • the Stutthof Museum in Sztutowo;
  • the fishing harbour in Kąty Rybackie;
  • the Vistula Lagoon Museum in Kąty Rybackie;
  • Kąty Rybackie Nature Reserve, with colonies of cormorants and grey herons;
  • the Nowy Świat Shipping Canal, or Vistula Spit Canal;
  • the Vistula Spit Beech Forest Nature Reserve near Przebrno;
  • the yacht harbour on the Vistula Lagoon in Krynica Morska;
  • the lighthouse in Krynica Morska;
  • the border of Poland, NATO and the European Union (if extending the trip to Piaski).

Stegna – Junoszyno – Rybina – Stegna route

  • Distance: approximately 19 km
  • Route map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/1JVmSkCFY8ZGqw9z5
  • Cycling time only: approximately 1.5–2 hours
  • Difficulty level: easy, but requiring caution on public roads
  • Surface: hard-packed gravel, asphalt and local roads with light traffic
  • Recommended bike: trekking, cross, gravel or MTB
  • For whom: recreational cyclists, beginners and families with older children who can safely ride on public roads

From Stegna, head west along the R10 section running through the seaside forest to Junoszyno. In Junoszyno, the route turns south and at the level of Stegienka joins the main EuroVelo 10/13 route. It then leads through Głobica towards Rybina. This section runs along the flat and mostly asphalt roads of Żuławy. Motor traffic is usually light here.

The most distinctive point of the loop is Rybina. The Szkarpawa, Linawa, Vistula Królewiecka and Tuga rivers meet there. You can also see two drawbridges and a railway swing bridge used by the Żuławy Commuter Railway. From Rybina, the route returns to Stegna via Popowo. However, for the vast majority of this section there is no designated cycling path, so considerably greater caution is required than on the earlier Żuławy roads.

On the Stegna–Junoszyno–Rybina–Stegna route, particular attention should be paid to:

  • the seaside forest between Stegna and Junoszyno;
  • the “Moczary” peat bog complex near Junoszyno;
  • the Żuławska Commuter Railway stop in Junoszyno;
  • the canals and drainage ditches shaping the Żuławy landscape
  • the water junction in Rybina;
  • the railway swing bridge in Rybina;
  • two road lift bridges in Rybina;
  • the marina on the Szkarpawa River in Rybina.

Stegna–Rybina–Kąty Rybackie–Stegna route

  • Distance: approximately 27 km in a loop
  • Route: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ikocUKwFChJdcsKC9
  • Riding time only: approximately 2–2.5 hours
  • Difficulty level: moderate
  • Surface: paved public roads, designated cycle paths, compacted gravel and forest roads
  • Recommended bicycle: trekking, cross, gravel or MTB
  • For whom: recreational cyclists with basic fitness and families with older children accustomed to riding on public roads

From Stegna, head along Gdańska Street through Popowo to Rybina. The initial part of the loop follows a public road. During the season, particular caution is required due to increased car traffic. After Rybina, the route follows quieter roads. It continues to Sztutowo along the Wisła Królewiecka River and then to Kąty Rybackie beside the Vistula Lagoon. From Kąty Rybackie, you can directly join a section of the popular R10 Vistula Spit route, which leads to Stegna.

The loop is known as the lift-bridge route. The name comes from the group of historic bridges in Rybina. There are two road lift bridges along the route—blue, over the Wisła Królewiecka River, and yellow, over the Szkarpawa River. Nearby, you can also see a railway swing bridge dating from 1906. At the crossings, pay attention to the signals and lowered barriers, as the bridges are opened for watercraft according to a set schedule. It is worth noting, however, that the route turns just before the second one.

On the Stegna–Rybina–Kąty Rybackie–Stegna route, particular attention should be paid to:

  • the yellow lift bridge over the Szkarpawa River in Rybina;
  • the blue lift bridge over the Wisła Królewiecka River in Rybina;
  • the railway swing bridge in Rybina;
  • the marina and water junction in Rybina;
  • the Żuławy landscape between Rybina and Sztutowo;
  • the Stutthof Museum in Sztutowo;
  • the fishing port in Kąty Rybackie;
  • the Vistula Lagoon Museum in Kąty Rybackie;
  • the Kąty Rybackie nature reserve.

Stegna–Tujsk–Żelichowo–Nowy Dwór Gdański cycling route

  • Distance: approximately 35 km round trip (of which Tujsk is approximately 8 km one way, Żelichowo approximately 13 km, and Nowy Dwór Gdański approximately 17.5 km)
  • Riding time only: approximately 2.5–3 hours
  • Difficulty level: easy in terms of terrain, moderate due to the distance and sections on public roads
  • Surface: asphalt, local public roads, compacted sections on the embankment and a section made of openwork concrete slabs
  • Recommended bicycle: trekking, cross, gravel or MTB
  • For whom: recreational cyclists with basic fitness and those interested in the landscape and historic sites of Żuławy

From Stegna, head south towards Popowo and Rybina. The initial section follows public roads, so it requires greater caution than the forest sections of R10. In the area of the lift bridges in Rybina, the route joins EuroVelo 10/13 and continues to Tujsk. It then runs along the flood embankment of the Tuga River through Żelichowo, where you cross the river by bridge, and then continues along its bank to Nowy Dwór Gdański. This section is almost completely flat and offers views of the typical Żuławy landscape—open fields, canals, embankments and buildings lining the river.

Our suggested route ends at the Żuławy Historical Park in the centre of Nowy Dwór Gdański. You can rest there before returning or extend the ride along the next section of EuroVelo 10/13 towards Elbląg.

On the Stegna–Tujsk–Żelichowo–Nowy Dwór Gdański route, particular attention should be paid to:

  • two lift bridges over the Wisła Królewiecka River and the Szkarpawa River in Rybina;
  • the lift bridge over the Tuga River in Tujsk;
  • the kayak marina in Tujsk;
  • the embankments and bends of the Tuga River;
  • the arcaded house in Żelichowo;
  • the Greek Catholic Church of St Nicholas in Żelichowo;
  • the remains of the Cemetery of Eleven Villages in Żelichowo;
  • the lift bridge over the Tuga River in Żelichowo;
  • the Żuławy Historical Park in Nowy Dwór Gdański;
  • the historic water tower in Nowy Dwór Gdański;
  • the lift bridge over the Tuga River in Nowy Dwór Gdański.

EuroVelo 10 in Stegna and the surrounding area

The R10 Vistula Spit connecting route runs through Stegna itself. It leads from Mikoszewo through Jantar, Stegna, Sztutowo and Kąty Rybackie to Krynica Morska and its farthest district – Piaski, near the state border. This route is the seaside branch of the international EuroVelo 10/13 route, allowing you to cycle through the Polish part of the spit.

When staying in Stegna, you can quickly reach EuroVelo 10/13, primarily at two locations. The first is in Jantar, about 5 km to the west. This is also where R10 connects with the main route. You can also head south to Rybina, which is likewise about 5 km away. In that case, you join EuroVelo 10/13 just before the first drawbridge in the village. From there, the route leads through Tujsk, Żelichowo and Nowy Dwór Gdański towards Elbląg, and in the opposite direction through Jantar, Sobieszewo Island and Gdańsk.

Summary

When staying in Stegna, cyclists can choose between the coastal section of R10, the nearby EuroVelo 10/13 route and local loops leading, among other places, through Junoszyno, Rybina, Sztutowo, Kąty Rybackie, Tujsk and Żelichowo. The proposed routes differ in distance, surface and difficulty level, so they can easily be tailored to your needs and abilities.
