Attractions

Stegna is not only sea and forest. It is a town with a rich past and numerous attractions.

Zulawy Loop

The loop connects numerous attractions related to the cultural heritage of Żuławy Wiślane. It is an area extremely rich in unique historical objects: gothic castles or arcaded houses, as well as hydrotechnical monuments: drawbridges or sluices.

Of the monuments, a real gem is the Baroque church from 1683, with an interesting interior and beautiful organ. During the summer season, an organ music festival is held every year.

Another item to visit is the Amber Museum in Stegna with an interesting collection of jantar.

At a distance of 2 km from Stegna is the Stutthof Museum - a former Nazi concentration camp.

During the vacations, an undoubted attraction is a ride on the narrow-gauge railroad. The route leads from the Right Bank of the Vistula River in Mikoszewo to Sztutowo.

About 20 km from Stegna is Krynica Morska with its lighthouse and the highest dune (49, 5 m high).  From here in the summer you can sail across the Vistula Lagoon to Frombork, Kadiny and Tolkmicko.

On the way to Krynica, it is worth stopping at the Vistula Spit diversion. Slightly farther away are the must-see places: Malbork with its Teutonic castle, and the Tricity.

What else is worth seeing while in Stegna:

Of architectural and historical interest:

  • The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in 1681-83 on the site of a burnt 15th century Gothic temple, from which only the tower, organ, altar furnishings and a bell from the Thirteen Years' War survived.
  • Particularly noteworthy are a model of a ship from 1872 suspended from the ceiling, a baptismal font from 1666 and a pulpit from 1687, as well as unique paintings on the 450-square-meter canvas-covered ceiling.

Drewnica and Zulawki - former Mennonite villages divided by the river Szkarpawa - have preserved unique sets of architectural monuments from the 18th and 19th centuries. In Drewnica there is a milling windmill "koźlak" (1718), Dutch homesteads and burghers' houses. In Zulawy several arcaded houses have been preserved, and near the village there is still in operation a huge sluice Gdanska Glow, which connects the Vistula River with Szkarpawa ending its course in the Vistula Lagoon.

Rybina-two historic drawbridges and what is believed to be the world's only railroad swing bridge.

Near Mikoszewo, at the mouth of the Vistula River to the Baltic Sea, is located the ornithological reserve "Mewia Łacha" - a bird sanctuary of international rank (Natura 2000 area) and a place where a number of interesting plant species can be found. This is a beautiful area diversified with ponds and diverse vegetation, where many rare species of birds have made their nests. There are colonies of seagulls, plovers and pale-fronted birds, nesting colonies of terns. You can also meet white heron, black stork and cranes.

  • "Beeches of the Vistula Spit", where you can see a 150-year-old stand of beech trees in their natural habitat.
  • "Kąty Rybackie" ornithological reserve with one of the largest black cormorant breeding colonies in Europe.
